And also, Kathryn Hahn is there! Hahn enters with an almost-punch and leaves with a proposal and a baby playing George's assistant-turned-only-friend in yet another totally mid movie that just leaves me wanting more of her. But she also somehow ends up on a blind date with George(?) a businessman who was maybe (definitely) framed by his dad for stock fraud.
Totally lost, she starts up an oddly matched romance with a professional baseball player, Matty (Wilson, who really phones it in for this one). Starring, of all people, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, and Paul Rudd, this very 2010 movie follows Lisa Jorgenson (Witherspoon), a professional softball player whose whole life revolves around the game, until she gets cut like five minutes into the film, and it barely comes up again. How Do You Know (not a typo, there's intentionally no question mark, unfortunately) is a relic from a time in Hollywood when they’d green-light any old romantic comedy.
If there’s something written on Kathryn Hahn’s forehead that says “cast me as a mom or the friend OR maybe even the mom friend,” then consider me that girl from Glee. PLEASE, can we keep casting her so I can update this list with more leading roles and eventually cover her in my future Oscar predictions pieces? Okay, thanks.įor this list, I focused solely on Kathryn's film appearances (excluding voice-over work and short films) and am ranking based on her performance within the confines of the movie - which perhaps explains some of my more controversial takes here. She rocks a prosthetic pregnancy belly like no other, nails every wacky sex scene (of which there are a LOT) she’s tasked with, and speaking of her face - she can wordlessly convey SO many emotions in everything from heart-wrenching dramas to gut-busting comedies.
While she’s been working pretty much non-stop since 1999 (the year of my birth, coincidence or kismet?), Hahn only has a handful of lead movie roles on this list, rounded out by a lot of supporting roles I so desperately wish we had got more of her in, and typically hilarious cameos in everything ranging from big blockbusters to little indie films where you’d least expect her to pop up.
Now, what did I learn from this not-so-little project? Well, either Kathryn’s talents do NOT extend to picking out parts or, more likely, Hollywood just can’t recognize one of the undoubtedly future greats. I’m no stranger to ranking actors’ filmographies here at BuzzFeed (peep my Andrew Garfield list), so when I found out my queen Kathryn Hahn was going to be playing a pivotal role in the new Knives Out sequel, I figured what better chance for me to rewatch every single movie she’s ever been in and rank her performances from decent to utterly divine?
